1991 mercury grand marquis
A code six, six flashes means it is the driver side air bag circuit reading open or high resistance. It is the air bag sliding contact assembly (clockspring as it is called). To get an idea what you are looking for the picture below is a Dorman air bag clockspring replacement part. Parts Geek carries them and usually cost around sixty dollars. I would check all the connectors, examine the wiring and such for good connection etc. first before replacing. Replacement involves removing the air bag and steering wheel to get to the clockspring. I think Ford issued a TSB (Trouble Service Bulletin) or something on this.

I saw that in my resaerch and it was the first thing I did,,,,replaced the clockspring and it was a pain in the ***. No change. Still blinking......6 times, 6 times, 6 times....I'd be scared but, 6 times, 6 times, 6 times, 6 times......
1) Was the clockspring you put in new? When there is a poor connection where the clockspring connects into the main wiring harness, an open circuit or high resistance in the clockspring module occurs.
2) Diagnostic module failure. The internal fuse in the air bag diagnostic module blows sometimes. I am thinking it is not replaceable.
Troubleshooting involves wiring checks, resistance measurements etc, you will probably need a shop manual for that.
3) Check you wiring under the seat, especially if you have removed, had an accident, or worked on it lately...sometimes a wire gets cut etc. causing an "open" circuit...seat belt sensor etc. to be flashing.
...flash 1-6
4) Last resort is having the dealer scan the code for you; it would give you a direction to go in.

Added 2/17 : Seat belt components(tensioner rtc.) if my memory serves me...will set air codes too.
For those following this thread :
Code Component Fault/Description
2 All Primary Crash Sensors Disconnected.
3 Air Bag Deployment Circuit - Low Battery Voltage or Low Backup Power Supply Voltage
4 Safing Sensor - Diagnostic Circuit Open or Low Primary Crash Sensor Resistance
5 Air Bag Circuit or Crash Sensor Circuit - Shorted to Ground
6 Driver-Side Air Bag Circuit - Open or High Resistance
7 Passenger-Side Air Bag Circuit - Open or High Resistance
8 Primary Crash Sensor - Not Mounted to Vehicle Properly
9 Primary Crash Sensor Circuit - Open or High Resistance
10 Diagnostic Monitor Internal Thermal Fuse - Open Due to Intermittent Short to Ground

My 1991 merc grand marquis LS flashes 9 times. Has since I bought the car in 2003. One shop I had work done, said it was the central sensor on airbag. This car's left signal flashes after a heavy rain or big snowfall. Turning emergency flashers on then off stops this. Hope this helps.
I am having fast idle problem with this car. I have anoyher with different problems and shall post later.
